Routinely, public safety personnel and emergency managers respond to natural, technological, or civil emergencies throughout Muncie and Delaware County. Occasionally, these events reach a magnitude that is beyond the response capability of local or county level resources. Events of this nature may require the support of adjoining jurisdictions to include cities, counties, the State of Indiana, adjoining states, and federal resources.

Given an emergency of extraordinary scale, these events may be formally declared a disaster by the Governor of Indiana and by the President of the United States. The State of Indiana response to state and federal level disasters are managed by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security in the State Emergency Operations Center. The State of Indiana Emergency Operations Center, located in the lower level of the Indiana Government Center, functions as a central coordination center for subject matter experts and key organization personnel who facilitate an effective, direct and coordinated response to the needs of the citizens of Indiana in the event of a natural disaster or significant events.

The Delaware County Emergency Management Agency strongly recommends the utilization of an emergency alert radio that is capable of receiving information from the "All Hazard Radio Network". The emergency alert radio is capable of providing important weather related information such as tornado watches or warnings. In addition to urgent weather related information the all hazard radio is capable of relaying information such as "AMBER ALERTS" and chemical spills/releases in your area.
