Domestic Violence Victim Advocate
The Delaware County Prosecutor employs a full time victim advocate for victims of domestic violence and crimes perpetrated against women including:
- Domestic battery
- Rape
- Sexual Battery
- Stalking
- Intimidation
- Harassment
Some of the Victim Advocate's duties include:
- Provide advocacy to victims of domestic violence and crimes against women on behalf of the Prosecutor’s Office.
- Inform every victim of their rights under Indiana law.
- Provide timely assistance to victims of crime, including sending letters to victims, answering inquiries from victims about case status, and making referrals to appropriate local service agencies that assist victims of crime.
- Contact victims as police reports are received from law enforcement agencies.
- Create and implement safety plans with victims.
- Engage in crisis intervention with victims suffering from violence and trauma.
- Maintain regular contact with victims via phone, text, or social media.
- Provide information to the victim as it relates to their case or crime committed. Assist in preparation of trial at the request of the victim.
- Accompany victims to meetings with deputy prosecutors, depositions and court proceedings and depositions as requested by the victim.
- Coordinate with state agencies, including Indiana Department of Corrections, Indiana Attorney General’s Office, and Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, regarding information and services for victims of crime.
- Assist victims with preparing a victim impact statement for presentation in court.
- Coordinate with local service agencies to obtain information regarding referral process and services provided to victims of crime; providing referral and service information to victims of crime as appropriate.
- Provide outreach and education to schools, hospitals, and other community groups regarding domestic violence and our victim advocate services.
- Plan Domestic Violence month activities.
- Provide training for local law enforcement officers and other professionals on prevention, best practices, and crisis management as it relates to domestic violence and crimes perpetrated against women.
- Create and update pamphlets and training manuals.
