Below are a few of the notable cases that have recently been prosecuted by our office:
  • State v. Ashley Stapert
    • Charges
      • 2 counts of A Felony - Child Molesting
    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted by jury of 2 counts of A Felony - Child Molesting, following an investigation conducted by the Muncie Police Department SMART Team which revealed that the Defendant, along with Bryan Strickler, had sexually molested a 6-mo child and caused the child to contract a sexually transmitted disease.  The Defendant was later sentenced to a maximum sentence of 100 years to the Indiana Department of Corrections.  The Defendant was also classified as a Credit Restricted Felon, thus limiting the amount of credit time she will receive while incarcerated.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted by jury of 2 counts of B Felony - Armed Robbery, a C Felony - Intimidation, and a D Felony - Auto Theft, following the armed robbery of a local CVS store.  The investigation conducted by the Muncie Police Department resulted in the Defendant's DNA being recovered from the scene, which was then matched with a prior sample of the Defendant's DNA.  Following his conviction, the Court imposed a sentence of 29 1/2 years to the Indiana Department of Corrections, to be served consecutively with an unrelated armed robbery case for which the Defendant had already received a 20-year sentence.

      • 2 counts of A Felony - Child Molesting
    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted following a bench trial of 2 counts of A Felony - Child Molesting, following an investigation conducted by the Muncie Police Department SMART Team which revealed that the Defendant, along with Ashley Stapert, had sexually molested a 6-mo child and caused the child to contract a sexually transmitted disease.  The Defendant was later sentenced to a maximum sentence of 100 years to the Indiana Department of Corrections.  The Defendant was also classified as a Credit Restricted Felon, thus limiting the amount of credit time he will receive while incarcerated.

      • 2 counts of A Felony - Dealing Cocaine
    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted by jury of 2 counts of A Felony - Dealing Cocaine, following an investigation by the Muncie Police Department.  The Defendant was later sentenced to a maximum 20-year sentence.
  • State v. Rahsaan Johnson
    • Charges
      • 14 counts of D Felony - Possessing an Animal for Use in an Animal Fighting Contest
      • 7 counts of D Felony - Cruelty to an Animal
    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted of 21 criminal charges stemming from his involvement in a dog fighting ring, which led to the seizure of over 20 dogs, some of which later had to be euthanized.  The Defendant received a 4-yr prison sentence for these offenses.

      • Defendant was convicted on July 19, 2013, for multiple counts of Dealing Methamphetamine after selling methamphetamine to an undercover informant on 2 separate occasions.  The Defendant was later sentenced to 40 years in prison.
  • State v. Benjamin Hankins

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on April 11, 2012, following a jury trial for the murder of his estranged wife, Lisa "Nettie" Hankins.  The Defendant was thereafter sentenced on June 21, 2012, at which time the Court imposed a total sentence of 64 years to prison.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on July 23, 2012, following a jury trial for his involvement in the robbery of the Industrial Centre Federal Credit Union, during which 3 tellers were held at gunpoint and over $200,000 was stolen.  The Defendant was then sentenced on September 18, and received a total prison sentence of 60 years.

      • Defendant was convicted and sentenced on September 6, 2012, for his involvement in the robbery of the Industrial Centre Federal Credit, Union, during which 3 tellers were held at gunpoint and over $200,000 was stolen.  The Defendant received a 20-year prison sentence.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on November 21, 2008, for his role in the 1993 murder of his estranged wife, Teresa French.  Following his conviction, Defendant received a total sentence of 80 years in prison.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on April 16, 2009, for his role in the 1993 murder of Teresa French.  Following his conviction, Defendant received a total sentence of 100 years in prison.
  • State v. Brittany McConniel

      • A Felony - Neglect of Dependent Resulting in Death
    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on May 19, 2011, for her role in the March 2010 death of 5-yr old Lauren McConniel.  Following her conviction, Defendant was given a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.
  • State v. Jarrad Mastin

      • A Felony - Child Molesting
      • B Felony - Child Molesting

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted on July 19, 2011, of 3 counts of Child Molesting (1 A Felony and 2 B Felonies) of a 4-yr old girl, during which time the girl contracted genital herpes.  Defendant later received maximum sentences for each of these convictions, for a total of 90 years in prison.
  • State v. William Bass

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted of the Attempted Murder of an unarmed man, whom he shot twice while the man was lying on the ground.  Defendant was also convicted of Criminal Recklessness for shooting at the house and car of another individual on the same night.  For these convictions, Defendant received a total sentence of 51 years in prison.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted for his role in the Armed Robbery of a CVS Drug Store, which included pointing a firearm at the pharmacist and demanding Oxycontin.  Defendant was sentenced to 14 years in prison for these convictions.

    • Summary
      • Defendant was convicted of Battery and Neglect of a Dependent, both resulting in serious bodily injury to her 2-yr old son.  The child presented to Muncie's Open Door Health Clinic with several bruises and abrasions on his face, forehead, ears, and torso.  Following the conviction, Defendant received a sentence of 10 years.

      • Defendant was convicted of A Felony Child Molesting for sexually abusing 4 boys, ranging in age from 7-13.  Following the conviction, Defendant received a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.

      • Defendant was convicted of B Felony Armed Robbery and C Felony Intimidation.  Following the conviction, Defendant received a sentence of 12 years to the Indiana Department of Corrections.
